It seems that the motto for the Houston Texans this year is "next man up".
As the Texans try to get to their first ever playoff appearance in franchise history, they have had to say "next man up" throughout the 2011 season. First, the 2010 breakout star running back Arian Foster had a hamstring problem in the preseason, which led to him missing 2 regular season games. 2010 2nd round draft pick Ben Tate replaced him, since then Tate and Foster has formed one of the best running back duos in the NFL. Week 4 one of the best Wide Receivers in the game Andre Johnson pulled a hamstring, which sidelined him until week 11. WRs Jacoby Jones, Kevin Walter, and Derek Mason and Tight Ends Owen Daniels and Joel Dreesen all had to step their game up in Johnson's place. Week 5 saw one of the Texans best defensive players, line backer Mario Williams, tore his pectoral muscle and is going to miss the rest of the season. In his place, rookie 2nd round pick Brooks Reed, stepped in and has had five sacks in the five games he has started. In Week 10, Quarterback Matt Schaub suffered a damaged Lisfranc ligament in his foot which has forced him to miss the rest of the season. In week 12 backup QB Matt Leinart made his first start since 2009. Late in the second quarter he was driven into the ground after throwing a pass. He instantly grabbed his shoulder and had a broken collarbone. He's out for the year as well. Enter rookie T.J. Yates. Yates finished up the week 12 game and is now the Texans starter the rest of the way.
So who is this T.J. Yates? Yates was selected in the 5th round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was a four year starter a the University of North Carolina and holds school records for total career passing yards, single-season passing yards and single-season total offense. At UNC, Yates ran the exact same offense as they do in Houston which makes Texans coach Gary Kubiak a believer in the rookie QB. Although, people are writing off the Texans because Yates is now under center, there is still hope for the Texans because of a weak remaining schedule (Falcons, @Bengals, Panthers, @Colts and Titans), their dominate running game of Foster and Tate, they still have one of the best WRs in the game in Andre Johnson, and also they have surprisingly one of the top defenses in the NFL. The Texans have one of their biggest tests of the season week 13 against the Falcons. So we'll see how the Texans look with "the next man up" at QB.

Down here in Houston nobody even talks about the Texans anymore. It is all about the Cougars (who lost today) and the rest of NCAA Football
ReplyDeleteWhat's crazy is did they ever have one week where all three (Schaub, Foster and Johnson) actually played together??
ReplyDeleteWeek 3 was Arians return and all 3 played...Week 4 all 3 played until Andre got hurt
